Rail Trails #14

I have a goal of riding every named Rail-Trail in New York State. There are many more railbeds not used for trains anymore which are also ridable. They are usually unnamed, unsigned, and unpublished. I speculate that this is because the owner is either indifferent or away. I've ridden some of these but I'm more interested in getting the named trails ridden first. I'm uploading them to OpenStreetMap as I go.

Rode the Northport Rail Trail (0.5mi) and Kings Park Hike and Bike Trail (1.5mi).

The first trail ride for which I have a date is June of 2004. So this has been an eleven-year project for me. Given that I'm not done yet, and they're continually making new trails, it looks like I've got another set of trails to ride.

Trails I've ridden:

Ride starting Sat Jun 6 15:53:07 2015

5.27 km 17303.36 feet 3.28 mi 1273.00 seconds 21.22 minutes 0.35 hours 9.27 mi/hr

The Kings Park Bike-Hike Trail is the former Kings Park psychitric hospital branch off the Port Jefferson branch. Used to deliver supplies to the hospital warehouse and coal to the hospital's central steam heat. Found a chunk of rails south of the warehouse still in the road. The trail leaves the railbed to avoid a portion of the hospital near the steam plant and warehouse. Comes back to the railbed, though, a bit north.

Rode the Northport Rail Trail on Saturday. It's pretty rough. No signage, concealed entrance on the north, overhanging brush, sandy portions, glass on the trail. On the other hand, people are using it, so maybe they'll improve it.
